INSTEP with NAC
and the arts, Sept/OCT 2006: Singapore Voices, International Acclaim
From
June to July 2006, in China, Wales and the Czech Republic, Singapore
choirs wowed audiences and impressed judges to receive multiple honours
at international competitions.
Two choirs made headlines at
the 34th Festival of Songs, Mundi Cantant Olomouc 2006, in Olomouc,
Czech Republic. The South West CDC Vocal Consort (above) achieved
perfect scores and received gold medals in both the Mixed Choirs
Superior and Folklore categories. It led three other choirs at the
festival's opening ceremony, themed Singapore Night. The choir was
subsequently inducted to the prestigious Societas Superior group, an
honour shared with only two other foreign choirs.
At the
same event, held from 7 to 11 June 2006 and which drew 184 choirs from
16 countries, Raffles Chorale clinched gold awards in the Mixed Youth,
Folk, and Mixed Chamber categories.
At the 60th Llangollen
International Musical Eisteddfod, held in Wales from 4 to 9 July, the
Anglo-Chinese Junior College Choir topped the Mixed Choir Category - a
first for an Asian choir, and came in second in the Youth Choir
Category. The prestigious event attracted participants from over 50
countries.
Singapore choirs also grabbed glory at the World
Choir Games - the Olympic Games of choirs, held from 15 to 26 July in
Xiamen, China. The Anderson Junior College Choir and Victoria Chorale
won gold medals and were champions in the Mixed Choir and A Capella
categories.
